Question
Today one of my piggies just died and her friend Izzy, seems to not be herself. Can guinea pigs be depressed? Then sometimes she lays on her side and if I touch a certain spot on her tummy her fliches like it hurts. Should she see a vet about it? and would it be best to find her a new friend as soon as possible? Thanks

Answer
Hi Faith.  I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your guinea pig.  Like humans guinea pigs can feel sad and lonely when a friend passes away.  Guinea pigs are social animals and live happily in the company of other pigs.  When their close cage mate dies, who they've spent 24/7 time with, they can become depressed by the lack of them not being there.  It sounds like Izzy is feeling sad by herself.  Finding her a new friend will help her in the long run but i'd wait about a week before introducing a new pig.
Before any new introductions i would suggest a trip to vet may be beneficial at this stage.  It is concerning how Izzy is experiencing some discomfort in her tummy.  If a reason for a pig's death is unknown it is even more so important for this check up in case of it being anything that could have passed on to the other pig.  It would be good to ensure Izzy is okay health-wise, and in time she'll get better and find new friendship.
I hope this helps you.
