Salt Lick

Question
So I've heard that guinea pigs don't need salt licks because they get enough minerals in their pellet mixes, but I see that guinea pigs stores constantly try to sell it to their customers. I don't think they're particularly good or bad, but I know they cause dehydration and therefore laziness and they eat less. But what else do the experts say? Does it cause kidney stones or something because of too much salt intake? I would like an in depth answer with signs of research if possible. Thank you.

Answer
Pet stores are always trying to sell you things because they want to make money. You have to do research as you said and not take their word for anything. http://www.cavyspirit.com/petstores.htm

You should not be feeding your guinea pig a pellet mix with seeds and nuts and colored bits. They need a high quality plain pellet fortified with vit c like Oxbow or Kleenmama.

You should be feeding your pig a diet of unlimited grass hay like timothy or orchard, limited high quality plain pellet, and a cup of fresh veggies every day, and a treat sometimes like a baby carrot or piece of fresh fruit.

Too much salt is bad for humans. It should be the same for guinea pigs. You shouldn't be supplementing any vitamins or minerals except maybe vitamin c. They can overdose and cause kidney or liver disease, bladder stones and sludge. You can read more here http://www.guinealynx.info/diet.html
