Question
QUESTION: Hi Andy,
My male guinea pig, vince, Is a year old in december. four and a half months ago he went to my friends house to mate with there two female guinea pigs. Five weeks ago one of the females gave birth to three baby cavies, two of which were male. My brother had one and my sister had the other and both little ones are kept in the same cage. Vince however is kept in a separate cage and he seemed a little lonely. His cage has been next to the other guinea pigs cage for the past week. Earlier today i tried putting my vince in the other cage and he started sniffing one of the little ones bums and he looked like he was mounting it. I didnt like the look of it so i took him out. I didnt want vince to bite one of the little ones, however i do want him to have some compainions cus he's lonely. What should i do? please help.
Nat

ANSWER: Hi

The behaviour that vince did when you put him with the babies is quite normal and is vince's way of establishing his dominance.

Whether having 3 males together in one cage will work when the babies are adults, only time will tell as it very much depends on the 3 pig's temperaments.

As long as its just snuffling, chasing and a bit of mounting you can keep them together, just keep an eye on things.

QUESTION: so i should keep them together?

Answer
Hi again

Based on what you have told me, there is nothing that Vince is doing that worries me. This is normal establishing dominance. So yes, you can keep them together.

However, if there is any signs of fighting please separate them and let me know if you like.

I very much hope that the 3 will get on fine as the babies will have been with vince since an early age.
