Choking/coughing sound

Question
Is it possible for a Guinea Pig to get a hairball? And if so, what product can I purchase at the pet store, to help with this? Is it the same stuff you would buy for a rabbit or cat? I took a small video of it, in case I need to bring him in to the vet, so I can show them, since it's likely he won't do it while we are there. We have 3 piggies and never heard this sound come from the other two piggies and have had them a year, and they are both Satins and the one making the choking/coughing sound is an Abyssinian (and we recently got him last month). He doesn't appear to be sick, no discharge from his eyes or nose, no other respiratory issues that we can tell, going to the bathroom normal, eating and drinking as usual and eating veggies regularly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Answer
No,guinea pigs do not get hair balls. Nor can they vomit. The sound you are hearing is a normal kind of thing that all pigs do now and then, even if their owners haven't heard it. It's not a distress sound, nor is it choking. It's a kind of clearing of the throat and is benign and harmless.

As you have observed there is no evidence of illness. That's because this isn't a sign of anything wrong. There's no need for you to take your Aby to the vet, he's just fine. Abys are a healthy breed and seldom have issues. They're also considered to be the most intelligent of all of the 13 cavy breeds. They're clever and industrious, always looking for something to do.

On the show tables it's always the Abys that figure out a way to open the door to their coops and get out. Some judges will say if you give an Aby a hammer and a nail it will build itself a house!

So stop worrying about this occasional sound. There's nothing to fix, there's nothing wrong.  Rest easy now, he's just fine.
