kidney infection(?)

Question
Our guinea pig stopped eating and drinking for a couple of days.  He had a blood test done which showed that his white blood cell count was extremely high and his kidney enzymes were 50% higher than they should be.  He's now on Septra to fight the infection and we've been feeding him (by syringe) a special diet watered down with water as well as giving him prescribed vitamin drops.  He also had to have a molar trimmed.  It's been almost a week and although he is showing some interest in his regular food and water, which is changed daily, he isn't eating on his own yet.  He seems a little better but I'm still not sure if he will pull through.  I'm also concerned that this problem will re-occur.  (I assume it's a urinary infection but I'm not sure).  Is there anything we can do to hopefully prevent this from happening again?  BTW, he has never eaten any fresh fruits and vegetables that we've given him.

Answer
Hi Carol

I think you might be right about the urinary infection. The only real way of eliminating these is through good higiene, but even then they still occur.

UTI's usually take 2 weeks to clear up in full so any sign of improvement now is extremely promising.

The lack of eating fresh foods may well be linked to his teeth problem which I hope has now been resolved.

Please feel free to keep me posted.
