Question
Hi there When we bought our 2 guinea pigs we where told the best pair were male and female and to get male nuetured the vet told us he had to be 5 months old so we got George done, but we were to late Izzy had 2 little pups 4 weeks ago.I'm sure one is male and one is female (Dexter & Daisy) because Dexter is already trying to mount his mum!!!!making all those rumbling noises. The thing is we were told by the vet to keep George separated for 8 weeks which i think is rubbish is it not 4? Well we have let the whole family out a few times keeping an eye on them ofcourse, but Izzy has started trying to attack George (she used to dote on him) one minute everything is ok next her hackles are up and she's after him is this because of the babies? Will we have to get rid of the babies? I always thought they loved company and thought we could keep them all together happy families will we need to keep babies and mum and dad separate  Please help we dont want to get rid of any of them ......

Answer
Hi Clare

Your pet store gave some very bad advice I'm sorry to say.

Neutering is a dangerous procedure at the best of times so you should have been advised to a same sex pair.

The most logical solution to your problem is to put the baby male with the father and the baby girl with mom and they should be able to live together in 2 pairs. Keeping all 4 together is out of the question I'm afraid.

You must make 100% sure there is no inbreeding between mother and babies or father and baby girl, thats very important.
