Question
Dear Mary,
My sister recently adopted three Guinea Pigs from a sanctuary and, while appearing happy and healthy, they have started scratching a lot and today two of them are "jumping".  I have read serveral websites advice which have recommended either Eurax ointment or a parasite powder.  What is your opinion.  Hope to hear from you soon.  Many thanks

Answer
Hi Caroline,

The scratching could be dusty hay or dusty wood shavings so make sure they are bedding out on newspaper with some hay on top.If you think they could have mites or similar, try bathing them all in SELSUN shampoo from the chemist. Bathe twice a week for 2 weeks and always make sure they are blow dried and not at all damp when they go back outside. Most piggies like a hair dryer.
As for the jumping, if it is manic and looks like they could have some kind of brain tumour then its called "popcorning" and is perfectly natural behaviour.
They will jump and twitch like mad, giving the impression they are having a fit or something. It means they are very happy and contented. It may be accompanied by a squeak too, as they get so excited they cant contain it any longer
Your sister should give herself a pat on the back for making the piggies lives such fun :)
