Question
QUESTION: We have a mother guinea pig living with her 6 week old daughter in the same cage. The two male babies have been removed at 4 weeks. I learned that the mother is supposed to wean her babies on her own between 3 and 5 weeks but she is still very large and round and so I wonder if she has weaned the female baby or not. Is it normal that the female remains so large after birthing and weaning?  Should I remove the female baby from the mother?  If so, for how long?

ANSWER: she should gradually be getting back to normal weight if you are feeding her a healthy diet. The daughter should not be feeding off her now and her milk should be near gone.
Is she red and inflamed around the nipples? Is she still feeling firm in her abdomen? are her droppings normal size and consistent?

It might be an idea to get her vert checked if she does not look right and the answers to the above are yes,yes and no.
Sows can get internal infections and nipple infections after the birth and can also get toxemia. It is best to be on the safe side.

QUESTION: Thank you for your reply;
What is a vert?
I made a mistake in my calculations; the daughter is actually 8 weeks old now.  The sow looks healthy and happy; her nipples are not infected and droppings are normal but she still feels as though she is full of milk. Any suggestions?

Answer
Spelling mistake sorry.
Vet/Veterinarian

The milk should dry up after a while.

The only other thing is if the father stayed in the cage with her after the birth he could of mated with her again, as can young boars if not moved away from the litter after weaning

If you are still not happy with her then take her to the vet. Only a vet can diagnose underlying problems.
