Question
QUESTION: at what age do female piggies become sexually active.
i put my two young males in with spike (dad) there nearly 5 week old one of the young ones was seen climbing on spikes back, bitting and pulling his fur out, i now think i made a mistake and they are female

ANSWER: Hi Julie

Thats possible but its more likely that they are males and just trying to establish dominance over Spike. Males and females can be sexually mature from about 3-4 weeks, hence the behaviour.

QUESTION: couple of weeks ago i ask you about bold patches on a baby guinea pig her fur is growing back nicely , gizmo (mum)looks like she malting, do short haired guinea pigs malt?
i know that spike malts hes an angoran white (scruffy bugger)
thanks. PS baby that had the bold patches is double of spike (dad)

Answer
Hi Julie

I am glad to hear the baby is better.

I have a short-haired pig that is malting a bit at the moment. It does tend to happen at the end of winter for some pigs. Unless there is any sign of skin inflamation or other health concerns then this is quite normal.
