QuestionI have a female giunea pig, The mom had 2 babies but she nibbled the ears off and killed both of them, Why do they eat the ears off to kill them?
AnswerThey don't. She may have been overzealous in cleaning them, but it is a myth that they kill their babies. They may have been ill or had something wrong with them, so they did not survive.
Guinea pigs when stressed and/or overcrowded will chew on each other's ears. I have rescued many guinea pigs with torn or non existent ears from large dumps/ or that came from backyard breeders where conditions were poor or pet mills.
This may be a learned behavior if she came from a pet store. How are you housing her? Have you seen www.guineapigcages.com and www.guinealynx.info ?
