GUINEA PIG FOOT PROBLEM

Question
Just noticed a growth like thing on the left front foot of our guinea pig.  It is at the end of the foot, next to the last toe, it is dark in colour, soft and curves round looking like a claw but it isn't - any ideas what this could be?  Many thanks

Answer
Hi Jayne,

I am terribly sorry for the delay with this response.
It sounds to me like your guinea pig is suffering from pododermatitis, more commonly known as bumblefoot.  Seeking treatment from a veterinarian who is experienced in the area of guinea pigs is imperative, for bumblefoot left untreated could be fatal.

Bumblefoot can be caused by wired cage floors, so you may want to be sure that the cage in which your piggie is living is comfortable for it.  One of the things a vet may prescribe is baytril, but there are several other methods of treatment.  A very helpful site with pictures and many treatment ideas is:

Thank you for your question, I hope I have been of some help to you.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.  Good luck with your guinea pig (=
