Question
Hello, I am from Greece and
I am new owner of two young guinea pigs (not more than 2-3 months old), possible male and
female. I had them only for a couple days and then i noticed under the eye of the male a
laceration like a scratch. By the night time, it grow much bigger around 1 cm in diameter
with hair loss and deep red color on the skin. Its covered with liquid looked a lot like blood
all though I cannot see a clear wound. The poor fellow eats and drinks but seems less active
now and I am afraid because its too close to its eye. Also, inside the one ear, looses skin and hair like flakes and underneath the same red color. I have no experience but from the info I
see here I think it could be a fungal infection. Is it dangerous and what can i do? I cleaned it with iodine solution but it seems to get bigger.
Also the female has two bold spots behind each ear but the skin looks healthy, just no hairs.
Is that normal?
Thank you very much for your time reading this.

Answer
Hi Dino,

For your male, I highly suggest seeing a veterinarian experienced with guinea pigs because it sounds like he needs medical attention from a professional.  If you really think it's a fungal infection, here is a very helpful site that can inform you of symptoms and treatment:

Mild bald spots are normal behind the ears - in the beginning I thought it was problematic, too, so it is easy to suspect something harmful causing hair loss.  However, if it grows worse, inform me and I will make some further suggestions.

Thank you for your question, I hope I was of help to you.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.  Good luck with your guinea pigs (=
