How can i give my guinea pig exercise and fun?

Hello Nick.

In order for your pig to get some good excercise, there needs to be time outside of the cage. You would need to pick an area where you could section off, and have to pig running around. I use my bedroom. I just make sure any wires are covered up (because pigs will CHEW ANYTHING), and i use grids to surround the area i don't want the pig to go and set some newspaper down in the area they like the most (so they can pee there). The worst that happens is you have to vaccum up the poo pellets. I usually create an area for them to have fun as well. I put cardboard boxes and cut entrance / exit holes, i add PVC pipe tunnels (bought at any hardware store for about 4 bucks a piece).

I have heard many people say that guinea pigs need about an hour every day of this excercise outside of the cage. I am a busy working woman so i do it about 2 times a week. (I also have a LARGE cage though). I let them run around for about an hour. Let me tell you, they do RUN around. My pigs get very excited during excercise time. It helps them stay healthy, and prevents them from getting obese.

For fun inside the cage, here's a small list of some things/toys you can add. Hopefully, you have a decent sized cage for your pig to run around in. For some cage ideas, here's a website. www.cavycages.com

1. PVC Pipe
2. Cardboard boxes
3. Wooden hidey holes
4. Cat balls (the plastic kind with the bell inside)
5. Wooden chew toys
6. Empty toilet paper rolls filled with hay
7. Bricks (I lay 2 bricks side by side and my pigs like to lay on top, or just climb the bricks)
8. Just simply putting a large handful of hay inside the cage will make your piggy happy.
9. The best toy for your guinea pig is another guinea pig. THey thrive on company. In the wild, guinea pigs are used to running around in groups of 10-15 pigs.
