Question
Hi. We just got a new guinea pig, I think he's a couple months old. He seems to poop all the time. It's hard to take him out and play with him b/c I'm afraid he's going to poop everywhere. Does this get better as he gets older? Also, do they need any kind of flea meds or shots or anything? The pet store said no, but I want to be sure. Thanks.

Answer
Guinea pigs do poop a lot normally, as it gets older it might learn to be partially potty trained, and tell you when it needs to go to the bathroom. Guinea pigs normally do not need flea medicine unless you let it run around outside or it you have cats or dogs with fleas, if so they do have small animal flea and tick spray and shampoo at pet stores. Many guinea pigs from petstores do have mites, they are microscopic and under the skin, not contagious to humans. If your guinea pig ever scratches a lot, looses hair, or runs around wiggling a lot and screaming like their skin is irritated, you will need to get a shot of ivermectin to kill the mites. Other than that no shots are needed for guinea pigs. I have some more information on my website http://woopets.bravehost.com . Let me know if you have anymore questions.
