Question
Are females larger then males?

Answer
Hi austin00,

Females aren't necessarily larger than males. It depends on the individual pig - their lifestyle, their diet and their body type. I will list what can affect a pigs' weight in each category.

LIFESTYLE:
A pig who lives in a small cage with little exercise outside the cage is likely to be less active and put on more weight.

A pig who lives in a good sized cage and gets at least 1-2 hours of exercise in a safe area outside the cage will be more fit and athletic and will weigh healthily.

DIET:
A pig who has a healthy diet of plain pellets, unlimited grass hay, a good variety of vegetables daily and no pet store treats (yoghurt drops, seed sticks etc) will weigh healthily.

A pig who is fed on a mix (feed with colored bits and seeds in) and who eats seeds sticks and other pet store treats has a tendancy to put on more weight due to the high level of fat in the diet. Pigs who are fed alfalfa hay and products as adults also risk putting on excess weight due to the high calcium and protein content in the hay.

BODY TYPE:
Some piggies are just more big boned than others, so can weigh more than the average piggy. Different body shapes - pear, square and oval - have different weight distribution, so some will just have it programmed in their genes to put on more weight in different areas.

On average, adult pigs (no matter what gender) weigh between 800 and 1800 grams (1lb - 4lb). A little over is nothing to worry about.

There are some piggies int he world who are much larger than your day-to-day guinea pig. These are known as cuys and usually weigh up to 6lb and are double the length and size of your regular guinea pig.

In terms of length, most adult guinea pigs can stretch to around 1ft in length. Different positions mean they can stretch longer, but when they are just sitting normally most are a little under 1ft (12 inches).

Best Wishes,

- Laura
