How do guinea pigs act when they are sick?

21 14:28:20

Question
Hi, I'm Dave. My guinea pig has not been eating the past few
days. He has been in perfect health up until recently. I clean the
cage regularly, i change his food, and water supply. I baby him
pretty much. Up until recently. he has refused to eat...and drink.
I don't know why. Now he looks sick, and I think he is dying. It's
sad seeing him starve himself. I know he hasn't eaten there
hasnt been any droppings in the cage :(

Answer
Hi Dave,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have had increasingly problematic internet issues as well as having a very busy home life (newborn twins), so have had difficulties answering many questions over the past 2 weeks. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

I suggest you contact your vet as soon as possible. Your guinea pig does sound sick, and a sick piggie needs prompt treatment. There have been no droppings simply because there is nothing to digest. Refusal to eat is a common symptom of many different illnesses, so be sure to have your vet check your guinea out within the next day - if you can get an emergency visit then do. Piggies who don't eat for more than a couple of days risk very serious consequences, and, sadly, death is a possibility when no food or water is taken in at all.

I do hope your piggie gets the treatment he needs. Good luck.

Best Wishes,

- Laura
