Question
my guinea pigs back legs are kicked out and he will not eat or drink. he tries to eat but he acts like he cant open his mouth. he also is very thin. what happend to him, and what caused it?

Answer
Hi Aaron,

He needs to see a vet ASAP. A specialist small animal or exotic pet vet if you can find one, an emergency one if you can't. He might have a blockage in his disgestive system, or he might have overgrown teeth or a sore mouth. Whatever it is - a guinea pig that cannot eat will rapidly deteriorate. He needs to be put on a drip and given painkillers ASAP, and once he is looking a bit better they will be able to treat him for whatever is causing the problem.

You'll probably never know what caused it - internal blockages are often caused by something the guinea pig ate, overgrown teeth are due to a lack of gnawing, and mouth ulcers are usually caused my an excess of fruit.

Good luck and I hope he'll be okay.

Jenny.
