Question
Hi Emma,

My female albino Abyssinian has been displaying a behavior of slight concern to me.  Whenever she runs quickly or seems to be stressed, she goes into brief convulsions.  I'm pretty sure it's not epilepsy or anything, because it's never a sustained fit.  So far, she has never hurt herself doing it.  She looks perfectly fine afterwards and is otherwise a healthy, energetic pig.  I can usually differentiate these convulsions from normal "popcorning".  Is this a behavior I should be concerned about?  Thanks for your time

Answer
Hi,

I am actually thrilled you have questioned me about this!! My guinea pigs do exactly the same thing! If i let them loose in the livingroom for some reason they seen to get giddy and break out in little leeps and seem to fit on the carpet. Also i have recently bought a guinea pig bed and soft things such as the bed make them have a fit-like reaction by flipping onto their backs and jumping around. Im disapointed that i cant help you with this question but i have been to the vets about it and have been told that it is just like a human laughing or having a strop and that it is not a problem and is perfectly healthy. Also sometimes if you sit her on your bed or on a carpet or something soft she may do it. Mine only ever seem to do it when on soft surfaces for some reason.

I hope i have answered this question for you. I am not 100% why they do it but i have answered this question to the best of my ability,Sorry x.

Thanks for emailing

Emma x
