Buying another male cavy?

Question
Thank you for the response.  I did a lot of research and decided to give the male cavy to my daughter's best friend and ended up buying 2 females at my local pet store yesterday that look to be about 3-4 months just to be safe.  I really wanted 2 this time and did not want any baby cavies :)  I do have one more question if you don't mind... They look identical, they are both chocolate brown and I can not tell them apart.  They are the same age, however one is just a little more fat than her sister.  Can cavies have identical twins?  I was assuming they could, but just thought I would ask.  Any suggestions on making them feel at home and warming up to us?  Thanks again!!  Hether

Hi,  My daughter's guniea pig just died 2 days ago and I just today went to my local PetsMart today to purchase another one from the same breeder.  I think that this cavy had a heart attack, although I really have no idea.  I simply spoiled it and did all the right things, so I am puzzled. I purchased another American (solid black male) and I was wondering if I could purchase his brother a solid chocolate from the same litter?  They were being housed together for about a week in my local PetsMart and I am assuming they lived together at the breeder's home.  They are about 2-3 months old, would be be harmful OR could it be harmful to purchase the other male tomorrow and have them grow up together?  I would hate for them to fight and hurt each other.  Thank you!!  Hether

Hi Hether

Males are a little temperamental as we know. But if they are brothers, there shouldn't be any problems in housing them together as long as you get the 2nd pig sooner rather than later. There are no guarantees though.

Answer
Hi again

I think you made the right decision getting 2 females.

Strangely enough, having 2 pigs related that look the same is quite unusual. I have never encountered that in my dealings with our furry friends.

As regards making your new arrivals feel at home. Be gentle, give them regular handling and encourage them to take vegetables from your hand. They will be your best friends in no time!
