QuestionA few weeks ago, I adopted a 3+ yr old boar. I examined his fur, and didn't
see anything crawling in it. after I'd had him about a week, he developed
baldspots, almost all of which are in the centers of his rosettes. after looking
all through guinealynx, I still don't know what it is. It sounds like if it were
mites, he'd be scratching a lot, and in pain. he seems fine, although he does
scratch a few times a day, but he doesn't seem bothered. also, the fur is
growing back inthe largest spot, which is about the size of a dime. bald
spots are just on his torso. I'm sure the obvious answer is, take him to a vet.
but maybe he's a carrier of something, and it flared up with the trauma of
relocation, and he'll be fine? also, unfortunately we'll be needing to rehome
him, because he is a HE. HE was supposed to have been a female, and
although I looked CAREFULLY for his peeper, I didn't find it until yesterday,
when he suddenly took an interest in his female cagemate. so she's probably
pregnant. but that's another topic! right now, I am just wondering if you, or
anyone, might know what these baldspots could be. I'm trying to do the
right thing here, but this is my first guinea pig, so I don't know as much as I
should, yet.
Thank you!
Katrina
AnswerHello Katrina,
I'm assuming he is an Abyssinian. Abys will having thinning rosettes on occassion when they get stressed or ill. It is a big deal for your show Aby but in pets, it's really not a problem. It was probably just brought about by the stress of moving and possibly even from being around a lovely little girl to flirt with. Just keep an eye on him to make sure there are no signs of illness but he is most likely just fine.
