guinea pig swollen toe

Question
One of our female guinea pigs has a very swollen toe (inside toe on front foot).  It's not red and there is no discharge.  It doesn't seem to bother her when she walks or when we touch it.  What could this be and what should we do about it?

Answer
Mary,

Sounds like she may have had a cut on her toe and as a result got infected and swollen up.

Try using an mild antiseptic on her toe for a few days and if nothing changes take her to the vet. A good mild antiseptic to use on her would be Benzalkonium Chloride common brand is Bactine. It is safe to use on small animals and works well.

Hope your female's toe gets better soon.

 Take care,
        Jules
