rabbits and guinea pigs?

Question
Hello
My question is can you keep guinea pigs and dwarf rabbits in the same hutch

Answer
Hi Steve,

As a general rule, no. Some keepers (especially at zoos) do keep rabbits and guinea pigs together, but this is usually in large outdoor areas. Although a dwarf rabbit and a large guinea pig will not be overly different in size, the danger in keeping the two together is that rabbits kick, and this could injure your guinea pig. Also, a number of foods that are safe for rabbits to eat are toxic to guinea pigs.

If you would like to have a pet guinea pig and a pet rabbit, the best thing to do will be to buy or make a very large hutch, and build a divider across the middle with a chicken-wire panel. Keep your rabbit in one side, and your guinea pig in the other. They will be able to see each other and talk through the divide, but eat separate food, have separate doors, and live separate lives. They will have companionship, but there won't be a risk of your rabbit hurting your guinea pig.

Please remember that a guinea pig will always be happiest living with another guinea pig, whereas rabbits are quite content to live on their own if they are regularly handled.

Best wishes,
Jenny.
