can I breed a short smooth hair with a short rough hair, without my babies turning out with genetic problems?  My female is black short rough hair and the male is white smooth hair. I mated them and about 2 months ago the female delivered 3 dead babies. she is fine. the babies were deformed. one had its nose and mouth all one open cavity, the other had a bone for a back leg, the other was born a runt. please email soon.

Hi Mary,
I am sorry to hear about the babies.
It is fine to mate 2 different breeds of guinea-pigs.
Is your female guinea-pig old?
Is she sick in any way?
Have you seen any syptoms of sickness?
Please write a follow-up question and answer these questions.
Thank-you for your time.
No she was never sick. When i bought her at the store they told me she was about 5 months old. A month later i tried to breed her. however she does have white streeks of hair throughout her black hair making her look as though she may have gray hair (old?. thankyou for responding so quickly. I love my guinea pigs.

Answer

Hi again Mary,

I am not sure why your guinea-pig is not delivering healthy babies.  But i Think that 5 months is too young to have babies. She is a baby herself. Let her mature a bit more and then she might deliver healthy babies.
I am sorry that i could not give you a straight answer.
if you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
