Question
Crap i just deleted everything i typed my bad.
Can you recomend me any good guinea pig brand foods in canada pet stores dont sell really good food.
Is there any guinea pig food i can make like? Is there any guinea pig recipe's for staple food's?
Is it best to get a guinea pig spayed or can i have a un altered female guinea pig?
I can set my guinea pig up for 60-70$!
Anything else you can add?
When is it warm enough to take your pig outside because i know -10 is not apropriate but i also no +40 can cause heat stroke so where is the to cold line and the to hot line and the perfect tempurture line?
Are they pooping machine's like will they poop constantly all over you? What do i do when a female goes into heat should i leave her alone or spend more time with her or just go on the daily normal routine's?
Anything else to add?
Thank's so  much for all your help i cannot wait to here back from you
Oh and the pig's will be staying in the basement will the furnace or washer and dryer noise's scare them?

Answer
Nicole,

There are two brands of food that I normally get for my girls, just depends on what store I am at. The brands are, Hartz Bonanza Guinea Pig food (you can normally find this at any store in the pet section.) and Kaytee Festa Guinea Pig food (you can find this normally at the pet store or even a few other stores in the pet section.) I couldn't find a recipe for staple foods and you really can't make your own Guinea Pig food. Also if you get baby Guinea Pigs like under 6 months old they are going to need alpha instead of hay, and they'll need access to it all day long. If you get some 6 months and older, then just normal timothy hay is fine they will still need access to it all day long. Just like their pellets.

I've two unaltered females and they are the sweetest things. So it really doesn't matter, but I find that Guinea Pigs that are unaltered seem to have a sweeter temperament. You will never notice when a female goes into heat, because she will continue to act normal. The only time you would every notice her in heat is if there was a male around or in the same cage. So you don't have to do anything different with a female at all, just keep up with the normal routine.

They perfect temperature for Guinea Pigs is between 17 and 22, that is the temperature Guinea Pigs feel most comfortable at, though one to two degrees warmer or colder won't really bother them. The to cold line is anything 15 and below and the to hot line is anything 24 and above.

Guinea Pigs aren't what I would call pooping machines, they don't poop that much but they do poop a lot. I clean up all the poop out of my girls cage (which as I said earlier it is just a bunch of cubs hooked together with a sheet under it.) every morning, and it takes less then 15 minutes to clean it up. So no they really are poop machines, they are fairly clean animals.

When you are holding a guinea pig for longer then 15 minutes make sure you have a towel under them or you going to get pee on. So if you don't want that make sure you have a towel handy. :)

You shouldn't have a problem setting your Guinea Pig up for $60 - $70 dollars, the pellets and hay don't cost that much, and since you won't be using litter for bedding that cuts the cost down a bit. A ten pound bag of pellets is normal $10 to $15 and hay for a large bag is less then that. So Yes you can set up your Guinea Pig for that amount no problem.

Just remember to feed your Guinea Pig fresh foods once a day, as this will provide all the vitamin C they need. Most Guinea Pigs hate the vitamin C drops that you put in the water, also it isn't really recommend to use that with Guinea Pigs, and some (like mine) don't like the little vitamin C treats you can put in their pellets. Besides that I find that Guinea Pigs that are feed fresh food once a day are healthier then those that aren't. So that will also save you some money as no expensive vet visits will really be needed. Mine only saw the vet once, and that is when I first got them to make sure everything was alright. I've not been back since as my girls are perfectly healthy.

My girls are in the basement also, just cause it is warmer and cooler down here, depending on what time of the year it  is. The furnace won't really bother them, or the washer and dryer, though as first they might be a little scared of the noise but will get use to it pretty fast. So nothing to worry about there.

Now if there is anything else I can answer for you, just go a head and ask them. I'll be more then happy to answer them for you.

         Take care,
         Jules
