Baby guinea pigs...

Question
We have recently decided we wanted guinea pigs and wanted them to breed. One of the pigs we purchased from a pet shop was already pregnant, my husband went out and found 2 babies this morning, one had been eaten, the other was happy and still alive. He seperated the all of the other guinea pigs from the mother and serviving baby. He checked on it later and it was fine, but tonight when i went to check on it, it looked like the mother had squashed it to death! what should I do to ensure the next litter will not die?

Answer
Hi Jen

I would be very surprised if the mother had actually eaten one of the babies as this doesnt tend to happen.

Anyways, so mothers are better than others, and I dont personally know of a way to ensure that a repeat of this experience doesnt happen again. One thing you must ensure is that the two pigs that mate are not related to each other.

However, the thing I always say to people who ask me about breeding is to think twice before you do this as there are too many pigs out there that already need a home. However, if you are confident that you can find homes for all the babies privately, then good luck to you.
