Showing my guinea pig

Question
Hey this is Boba's owner again. I was thinking it would be kind of cool to show him at cavy shows, but I Don't know if he's a pure breed. So will I still be able to show him. Plus Do you know if there are any cavy shows you could do online because I can't find any that are close to were I live.

Answer
Yes you can find cavy shows online. Go to the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Assoc) or ACBA (American Cavy Breeders Assoc) websites and they have a list of shows in your area. They also will have the names and emails of show secretaries or club secretaries and you can contact them for information.

If the shows are not sanctioned at least three months ahead the show might not list on these websites. You can also contact a 4H group near you. The 4H members also show cavies.

As far as showing your pig that would take a great deal of effort on your part to get him ready. It can take months to prepare the coat for showing. If you're really interested in showing a pig the best thing to do is go to a show first, see how it operates, then see if you can find someone who can sell you a show quality animal. I recommend beginners start with a shorter haired breed such as an American or a Teddy. Something that doesn't require the intensive grooming of the long haired breeds.

Where in Calif are you?  I am in Southern Calif and might be able to direct you to the right people to get what you are looking for. I'd be happy to assist you. Our club is having a guinea pig show in Ventura in Sept. I also know a number of people in Northern Calif who show, some of whom are judges. They would also be able to help you out.

Please let me know.
