eyes on our boy GP

Question
Our GP has really bulgy eyes. It looks like they are both irratated and the bottom white parts are sticking out. I can send you a picture if that would help. I would like to know what I can do for it. Do I really need to bring it to the vet or is there something that I can do?

Answer
Keena,

It sounds like your Guinea Pig as Pea Eye (or fatty eye).

Pea eye (or fatty eye) is a permanent protrusion of the conjunctival sac, thought to be inherited. Pea eye and fatty eye are frequently grouped together by vets as conjunctival swelling. These conjunctival protrusions can be removed by laser if they are interfering with vision. Cavies with pea eye generally do not seem to be uncomfortable and treatment is usually not necessary. Cavies with pea eye tend to have the look like their eyes are bulging out a little.

As long as he is acting normally, eating, drinking, pooping and peeing normally, and the eyes aren't watery, crusty, clouded, Receding, Protruding or Ulcerated. You don't need to take him to the vet. Though you may want to take him to the vet and have it looked at to make sure it isn't interfering with his vision or that it isn't irritated by something. Or if you notice a slight change in his behavior, eating, drinking, pooping and peeing or he is showing one or more of the eye problems above then by all means take him to the vet ASAP. To make sure that nothing is seriously wrong.

But the choice is up to you as to either take him to the vet or not. Though I would recommend taking him to the vet just to be on the safe side to make sure it is nothing more the pea eye or fatty eye. Other then taking him to the vet there is nothing you can really do for him other then make sure he is acting normal like always.

I hope this helps,
    Take care now,
