A friend for Roger

Question
Hello Laura

I have an approx 7 month old healthy bore, and up until now he has lived on his own since I rescued him 4 months ago, and he had to have treatment to his front paws as his toes had been crushed.  Now he back in good health I want the best for him.

However, I believe him to be starved of Guinea Pig attention and conversation and want to find him a friend.

Is this a wise move and how should I go about finding him a suiable friend as I know Bores will fight and a sow will mean pregnancy, or has my Pig spent too long on his own already and will find find it hard to mix?

Any advice would be greatfully received.

Gemma

Answer
Hi Gemma,

Your boar will be very grateful for the company of another piggie, I'm sure. It's definitely a wise move to look around the rescues and shelters to see the options out there.

Boars won't necessarily fight together. As your boar is approx. 7 months, he is coming out of puberty now. Neutering him is probably an option now, if you wish to ask your vet about that. If you have your boar neutered, he will get on very well with one or more ladies. I myself have one neutered boar living with three women and he has never been happier. His life is one long relaxing holiday!

Also there are sometimes spayed sows in rescues/shelters, so ask around a little and see if there are any spayed girls available. It's probably the easiest option if you want to encourage a good relationship quite quickly. (No need to wait for the effects of the neuter, and no need to take out extra time to ensure the friendship has begun between males.)

Boars tend to get along well together if:

* The cage is big enough. See www.guineapigcages.com for details.
* You introduce them properly (neutral territory, a food distraction, only separate if blood is drawn or one is in severe distress).
* One is older - two boars of the same age less than around 1 year can have extra issues as they are extra hormonal due to puberty.

If you want any more help, let me know and I will be glad to assist.

Best Wishes,

- Laura
