Question
sometimes penny makes this noise either when kiki walks by or  when i go to take kiki out that to me sounds like a dog growling and she will get really still.  i was just wondering if it means the same as a dog growl or if it means something else??

-----Question-----
i have one guinea pig penny and we arent home all day but in the morning and at night while we are home she is out and playing.  i thought that it would be a good idea if i got penny a friend so when we werent out and playing with her she would have someone to play with .  we went to the pet store and got another female.  She is young, but we are not sure how old penny is.  I let them meet how i read i layed towels down with treats and let them meet.  i dont think that they were fighting.
But im not exactly sure.  when they are in the cage together wherever kiki(the new piggie) goes penny(the first one) has to go to.  If kiki goes to get something to drink penny has to go. But when penny is in her iglo she sticks her head out to see where kiki is.  I feel dumb but how do you know if they like eachother.
-----Answer-----
Whitney,

There is nothing to worry about, they are not fighting and it sounds like you did a great job in introducing them.

Penny is acting in normal behavior. Penny is older then Kiki and as a result treats Kiki like her baby. Penny is Following Kiki to make sure she doesn't get into trouble, this also says that there is a tight bond between them. So they are really happy with each other and do like each other a lot.

When Kiki gets a little bit older then Penny won't follow her around as much, but will still be keeping on eye on her. Penny is just acting like a good mom, since she is older then Kiki that is how she feels, that she is Kiki's mom.

So everything is fine between them, they are happy and have a great relationship each other. :) Just keep up the great work with them and everything will be fine. Never feel dumb for asking a good question (I asked the same one a few years back.) so see it isn't a dumb question at all.

Good luck and enjoy having those great girls. Keep up the great care.

Answer
Whitney,

Penny is making that noise when Kiki walks by cause she is starting to tell Kiki who is the dominate one. That is normal and is to be expected, since Penny is older then Kiki she will most likely be the dominate female.

Penny is making that noise when you take Kiki out cause she is upset at you for taking away her baby. Again just normal behavior that shows what a tight bond the two of them have. She will stop that soon, when she feels she can trust you with her baby.

Since Penny is showing signs of dominance they will start to go through their dominance behavior here soon. So if there is raising of the heads, mounting, wiggling of rears, and dragging their rears on the ground. That is all normal, it is signs that they are deciding who the dominate one shall be. They won't hurt each other or anything like that, so just let them go through to motions and everything will settle back down to normal in awhile.

Hope this helps you in understanding their behavior a little bit better. Keep up the great care.

     Take care now,
