Question
I am thinking of making/buying a much lager cage for my one and a half year old male guinea pig. I am also considering getting him a friend. Would it be OK to have two males in the same cage even if it is a big cage?
Thank You

Answer
It is really hard to say if your male would be ok with another male guinea pig. I have only had a handful of cases of males getting along personally other than when they are together as babies. If your male though has never been in with a female and is pretty calm he would have more of a chance to get along. The best thing to do would be ask around and see if a breeder, rescue, or even a pet store would let you take your male to pick out a companion, that way you can be sure that they like each other, also you won't end up buying a guinea pig that the other doesn't like. I would either buy a very young male that is a baby and is very submissive, or a male that is around your male's age or older that is also submissive. I would also recommend introducing them in the new cage at the same time, don't let one get accustomed to the cage first because that will create dominance issues. The only other option would be to neuter your male and get him a female companion, I am not sure how much neutering cost, I have never personally neutered any of my guinea pigs, I know it cost between $40-100 to neuter a rabbit though so I am guessing around the same price range. If you see any signs of teeth chattering or the hairs on the neck standing up the two pigs will not work out together. Also always check the sex of the other pig, a lot of the time pet store associates do not know what they are talking about and will tell you that a female is a male. Let me know if you have any more questions.
