Question
Hi, I am interested in getting a guinea pig and I was wondering which vegetables would be the best for it as far as Vitamin C intake? Also, I've been looking at a guinea pig at Petco and I just noticed today that one of her eyes is smaller then the other. Is this normal? It's not cloudy and doesn't look irritated at all and there is no discharge. The hair and skin around it appear normal as well.

Answer
well with veg the best way to determine its suitability is by looking at how acidic and how watery it is. the more acidic the less they should have and the more watery the less often they should have it. the acidic stuff is what you really need to avoid, dont give them citrus foods and keep apples to more of a one off weekly kind of treat. i feed mine a lot of carrots because they are great for fattening up guinea pigs and are full of goodness without being acidic or watery. parsley is also very high in vit c. but the best thing for them would be to spend the day grazing on an untreated lawn asthe grass has everything they need and in the right levels.

as for the eyes, it doesnt sound healthy, most likly it is a small pieve of hay causing just the eyes to swell, also it could be that one eye is set in more making the other appear bigger. my advice would be to tell the store that you think thee might be something in her eye and that she needs looking at. then and if the eye has shrunk by her, otherwise it might be a deformative or other more serious illness which you do not want to have on your pig.
