Guineas pig is eating alot and just laying around in igloo

Question
Our guinea pig is just over two months old. She is eating alot and just laying around, then some times she is just running around the cage wildly. She was in a cage with another guinea pig(a boy) which we didn't know was a boy for about 5 weeks. Are these signs of pregnancy?

Answer
Hi Chris,

Guinea pigs do eat quite a lot naturally - they need an unlimited supply of grass hay 24/7, some high quality plain pellets as well as 1-3 servings of fresh vegetables daily.

Piggies can be quite sedate creatures, so laying around for hours every day is nothing to worry about (unless it is very unusual for that guinea or if their are signs of illness). The running around wildly may be popcorning; it means she is very happy and excited. If she leaps, twists and twitches, runs in circles and generally acts a bit like popcorn being heated (where it's bouncing all over the place in the pan) then you have a happy piggie.

A pregnant guinea pig may eat more, and her nutritional needs will change, but this on it's own isn't really anything to go by. If she was over 4 weeks old and was with a guinea pig who is over 3 weeks old, then there is a high chance that she may be pregnant. Talk to your vet about this possibilty; with her being so young you need to have top care lined up and do your best to make sure she is in top shape ready for the birth.

If you require any further help, let me know and I will be glad to assist.

Best Wishes,

- Laura
