My guinea-pig was rolling her eyes, is this ok?

Question
My 7year old guinea-pig has recently lost her rabbit companion, and
yesterday we were given a young guinea-pig who is under one. They had a
couple of arguments but seem to be ignoring each other. Today I went in and
my guinea-pig was lying in a sleeping position and was rolling her eyes. I've
seen her sleep lots of times with her eyes shut but never open and rolling! I
picked her up and checked her over and she seemed normal and the second I
touched her she stopped rolling them! Was she about to fall asleep or was
she hurt? Shes acted normal since then, and ate, drank and ran about ok. Is
she ok?

Answer
Hi Sophie,

I think she was probably just sleeping with her eyes partially open; this can happen to humans and many other animals. It looks weird, but just means she was dreaming. As she is 7 years old now, she's a very old lady and will probably start to sleep a lot more. She will be much happier with a young guinea pig as a companion than a rabbit, so good choice for her second cage-mate. You may want to get another young female to keep the other company, as your old girl won't have the energy to play as much as the little one would like.

Congratulations on keeping your piggy happy and healthy for so many years!

Best wishes,
Jenny.
