Hi I have a guinea pig that is about 5 years old. He's been doing fine
except lately he's been drinking A LOT of water, more than he ever has. So
today he's laying in his cage unable to move and barely breathing, pretty
much dying. What could've happened all of a sudden? He's outside and its a
nice day, but not hot or cloudy, I've put him outside many many times
before. Thanks...

I'm so sorry sylvia for taking so long to answer you back. I had taken a couple of vacation days and forgot to inform the site. I sure wish i was there to help out when you wrote.

5 years old for a piggy is considered senior. It sounds like your piggy is ready to cross the rainbow bridge. When it comes to the point where he is unable to move and barely breathing, it's the point where you say goodbye and give him his last guinea pig kisses. If the only thing you told me was that he was drinking alot of water, there could have been a couple of reasons for him to be taken to the vet. He could have diabetes, perhaps a kidney stone, but in his current condition he is just waiting to pass over. I would assume by this time he has passed away, but if i'm wrong, then you wouldn't want him to suffer so you should maybe take him to the vet to see about putting him down.

When guinea pigs start to go downhill, it's just a process that hits them immediately. Guinea pigs can go from being 100% to zero really in a matter of a couple of days. It's just how their body works.

Please let me know how your baby is doing.

Hi Christy!
Thanks for the information! My baby died about half an hour after I wrote.
I stayed with him and patted him till he died. I miss the little guy, he
would always squeal when I'd open the fridge. His favorite food was
parsley.

I can't believe how they can seem to be normal one day then just collapse
and die like that! He was my first piggy, I've always had cats and
hamsters. I went and got a hamster today so I'd have another little guy,
but I'm gonna wait before I get another piggy. Thanks again!!

Hello Sylvia.

I'm so sorry about your loss. I'm feeling really bad that i wasn't there when you wrote.

I know it's hard to look at things such as the fact that he didn't suffer. Sometimes with old piggies their kidneys or liver, or heart just shuts down. It's so fast. That's a good thing though because really some animals decline badly for a period of a month or so. Then you know the animal is suffering. At five years old he lived a long life, and i'm sure he loved him mama! That's one thing i always hold onto myself, the squeal as i walk into the room with dinner. Do you have any pictures of your piggie?  I would love to see him.

Take care,
Christy

Hi again!

I guess you're right, he did love me, I always had food for him and he'd
always squeal for me. I would love to send a picture of my piggy to you!

How many piggies do you have if any?
How can I send a pic through here? Thanks again!!

Sylvia

Answer
Sylvia.

Actually, send it to my personal email peachychristy79@yahoo.com. Also, if you have any questions or whatnot involving piggies, i'll be here!  :)
I just love seeing pictures of other people's pigs. Every pig looks different and has a different personality. It's hard to believe that in peru, they eat millions of them a year. I know one thing for sure, i'm not living in peru. lol.

Right now i have 4 piggies. They are all girls and live in a giant cage that i made for them. There names are Avy (year and a half old whom i rescued from a cousin who neglected her), Bella (2 years old, bought from petco), Ellie (6 years old. She's got a story. She was bought for my sister by her boyfriend. He had passed away, and she became allergic to her. Severely allergic. She didn't want to give ellie up because she had memories of brian. I took over her care, and at the time knew nothing about piggies. I started researching them and ended up with a whole lot of knowledge and 3 more pigs!)And finally my big fluff ball Pippi (bought from petco), who is about 4 years old. A mix between a long hair and a short hair, and she just looks like one big mohawk. She's sweet too. In 3 years has never biten me once. Just licks. She likes to lick.   I love my babies. Sorry if i went on about them.

Hope to hear from you soon. :)
