Open Wound

Question
There is a patch of hair on my Guinea Pigs back that is not consistant with the flow of the hair on the rest of her body. In this particular spot, she has a lot of flakes and what looks like tiny little scabs. When I pet her or touch her in this area, she always snaps at me as if its uncomforatble or hurts her. When I brushed some of the hair back, I noticed an open wound. Her sensitivity to this area has always been but since I noticed the wound, she behavior has changed. The wound is fresh with slighly dried blood. How do I go about treating this wound and how can I help the flaky scab type stuff on her back. Can this be treated with neosporin?

Answer
Kori,

Treat the wound with a mild antiseptic. The best type of mild antiseptic is Benzalkonium Chloride as it is a mild antiseptic. It comes as pre-packed towelettes, as a spray, and in squirt-bottles. A common brand of Benzalkonium Chloride is Bactine. It'll keep a the skin moist, keep the wound from getting infected and also help in healing it up faster. Make sure she isn't scratching at it or anything, so it'll stay closed and heal.

If the wound is still there in a week, take her to the vet to have it looked at. Just to make sure it isn't something else that is causing the wound.

I hope this helps,
  Take care,
