Need help with bonding 3 males!

Question
Hi Sam, I'm glad you're still available.

I have a pair of 6 mo. old males that are bonded.  I recently adopted another male (10 mo.) who lives in a separate pen.  Both of their houses are in the same room so they always see each other.  When I let the pair out, they immediately go to the other guy and start strutting along the sides making low machine gun sounds.  Sometimes the pair run over each other in a little frenzy trying to get at him.  The new guy does the same, strutting along as well.  Many times they will stick their faces through the NIC squares either biting or (just getting acquainted?).

Next:  When I let Edward out (new one), he goes over to their pen and everyone does the same thing.  Then, I'll notice Edward lying down near Monty who's inside his pen with Theodore.  Monty will be lying down too near Edward.

Next:  I put the 3 of them on the bathroom floor together yesterday.  I wasn't sure how long to let the session go as I've only bonded bunnies.  These 3 were constantly going all around with each other, sometimes cornering Edward in the corner, making all kinds of noise!  It was getting quite loud.  Funnily, they all lied down at times resting then started up again.  Nobody ever got on their haunches and acted like he was about to lunge at another but it still seemed like a frenzy at times which worried me.  I called off the session after 1/2 hr.  There was teeth chattering too especially from Monty, who's the dominant one with Theodore.

Next:  Sometimes Monty would start LOUDLY chirping, just like a bird (chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp, etc.).  It would go on and on even tho' he wasn't doing anything.

I am at a loss as what to do, should I keep trying?  Should I give up and just get Edward a partner of his own and keep the 2 pairs separate?  Even then, although I'd love to get another guinea pig, I guess I can't even be sure he'd bond ok with Edward, right?

Like I've said, I'm only experienced with bonding bunnies and you know when they're mad/about to fight.  There's no mistaking it.  With guinea pigs, I'm never quite sure exactly what they're doing when they're all hunched up together, moving so quickly and squawking constantly.

Sorry for the especially long letter.  I just had to try and put as many details as I could hoping it may help your answer to me.

Thanks so much,
Paula

Answer
yeah, it is all perfectly normal behaviour, if edward is seen lying by monty then that is excellent. but ill do a quick breakdown of bonding behaviour

squeaking (chirping), combination of excitment and anticipation, usually a good thing, they tend to do it when they knew they are being fed.

lying down/raising head/mounting, lying down means they are submitting, raising head/mounting means they are asserting their dominence.

teeth chattering, means they are threatening someone, its normal to hear when bonding but keep a close eye to make sure the chatterer does not start to attack the other.

rumblestrut, a machine gun noise that is made when around any new guinea pig, especially by a male when introduced to a female, basically its a weird sort of flirting though also sometimes becomes part of a dominence play.

so long as you can see no biting then its all going well, but as i had said before, placing them in a run on a lawn works wonders because they have grass to preoccupy them between dominence sessions.
