guinea pigs and choking

Question
Hi Kat,
My female guinea pig is almost two years old.  She doesn't have cagemates, and her name is Chachi.  She gave me a good scare the other day when she choked on a pellet.  Fortunately, she was fine!  If this ever happens again, what is the best way to help a choking guinea pig?  It was a truly frightening experience!  Thanks!

Answer
Hello Alyssa,

Unfortunantly there's not alot you can do. You can try rubbing her throat to try to help her dislodge the pellet but there really isn't a piggy Heimlich Manuver. Usually they will choke until they dislodge the pellet themselves. Hopefully it's just a one time thing and Chachi won't choke ever again.
