Question
Hi, I'm Liz. I just bought my little piggy today. He is very cute and I'm guessing under 8 weeks old. So I put together his cage and everything and put him in the cage but he started shrieking right away so i picked him up and he stopped. He fell asleep so i put him in the cage but when i closed it he woke up and stared shrieking again. So i picked him  up again and he ran up my shoulder and stared hinging in my hair. And so i tried to put him in his cage and he kept shrieking, nut when i walked out the room and closed the door he stopped but when i walked back in the room he started shrieking again and so i picked him up and he ran into my hair again. Why does he shriek when i put him in his cage and stop when i pick him up, and why does he like hiding in my hair?

Answer
Most pigs, especially the babies, like to get right on your shoulder and get into your hair. I think it reminds them of their mammas' fur, it's warm, dark and feels safe. Your little guy has probably been pulled from his mom and is lonely and scared. Most babies are weaned from their mom at four weeks. At that time they only weigh about eight ounces, sometimes less.

My guess is he's younger than you think and is crying for his mother and you're now his new mommy. He feels safe in your arms and has a safe place to cuddle. He would be happier if he had company. But if you get another pig make sure it's the same sex.

You might try giving him a place to hide in his cage. An oatmeal box with both ends cut out of it make perfect little hidey holes. To him the cage is enormous and frightening right now. He will eventually get over crying for mom but it will take time.
