Question
Hi..my friend has a guinea pig..but he doesn't poop since last night. but he ate normally.. pellets, hay and also vegetables.. what should we do to help him before we brought him to vet?

Answer
If this is an older pig (more than a year or so old) check his bottom and make sure he isn't what we call impacted with stool.

Older boars have this problem sometimes and it's not something that is related to his diet. It's anatomical. Their scrotum is large and the rectal opening is between the two testicles. Sometimes when they poo the stool gets stuck and mushy between the testes and doesn't pass completely out.

Spread the scrotum and see if there is stool that looks like it's backed up in there. It's usually soft and mushy as it piles up against the stool behind it. If that's the case it's fairly easy to take care of. Turn on the faucet in the sink. Use barely warm water. Put his bottom up to the faucet and let the water run right in there.  It will flush out the stuff that's there.

Boars also have a sticky white thick secretion that is a lubricant of sorts that smell awful and will cause a backup like that.  This is not constipation. Constipation is something that happens when there isn't enough liquid in the stool and causes it to harden and be unable to pass. That's different than this problem.

I don't think you need a vet at this point. This sounds like the typical boar related issues that we run across with all senior boars. By senior I don't mean old, just by size.  The problem is worsened in the summer or during hotter weather because the testicles will hand lower to keep cooler.

Humans males are the same way.  The sperm is very sensitive to heat and cold and must be protected. This is nature's way of keeping them at the right temperature for reproduction. They will draw up when it's cold and move down when it's hot. Cavies are the same way. Except that because of the positioning of the rectum it creates a problem passing stool.
