Question
Please help. We received a chihuahua mix about a month ago. I took her to the vet today and he said she is about two weeks away from giving birth. I want to be prepared any suggestions will be helpful. She is only a year old and weighs about 5-6 pounds. The father of the puppies is most likely her brother, he is almost identical to her. Please let me know what to look for and what to expect. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Tammy. THe most important thing here is to not let mom get fat. Make sure she gets plenty of exercise. A fat dog has trouble whelping on her own. If she has a colored discharge before the birth of the first puppy, get her to the vet. Most dogs will pant and dig for about 24 hours before whelping. Make sure she has a whelping box in a private room, free from drafts. If the dog is actively trying to push for over 15 minutes, not producing a puppy, get her to the vet. I'm not talking about panting. I'm talking about actually trying to push a puppy out. You'll know it when you see it. If three hours goes by inbetween the births, call the vet. I'm going to give you a great web site. It has plenty of pictures, and tell you what you need and what to expect. Have a look at it, and if you have anymore questions, feel free to write!
