Question
Hi My 4 1/2 year old boxer normally goes into heat once a year but back in june she went into heat (she usually goes into heat on october.) She ended up having puppies in august when should I expect her to go into heat again. I dont want her to have puppies too close together. This has never happened before I dont know what to expect. I dont want a surprise again. The only thing that was different was that we did get a male in march before the early heat. Thanks for any advice on what to expect.

Answer
Hi. If she normally comes into heat once a year, then I would expect her to come back in next June. However, just to be safe, I would watch her closely in Dec. just in case she decides to come in 6 months after her last cycle. If she should come into heat earlier than expected, I'd take her in for a check up just to make sure that everything's ok. As a dog gets older, her heat cycles will change, like in women with their periods. They may come closer together, or get further apart. Just keep an eye out, and watch her closley. Good luck.
