Shih tzu dog is having puppies

QUESTION: My shih tzu is 47 days pregnant and she is was almot 11 lbs before pregant.  I took her last week and she is now a little over 13 lbs.  How much more wieght will she gain and how many puppies do they usually have?

ANSWER: Hi. Every dog is different in how much weight they gain. If your girl was on the thin side to begin with, then she may need to gain a bit more. Just make sure she gets plenty of walks in, and try not to let her get too overweight. On average, your breed has 2-5 pups in a litter. Remember, this is just an average, your girl may have more of less.

QUESTION: Thank you for your answer.  I also was thinking of taking her to get an x-ray done.  how many days should she be when i take her?   What do you think about whelping boxes do they need one?  thanks Sindy

ANSWER: She has to be at least on day 50 for the x-rays. I really suggest having them done. As for the whelping box, definitely. You may be able to use a plastic storage bin as a whelping box for her. Easy to clean, perfect size.

QUESTION: Oh by the way when do you start to feel the puppies moving in her stomach?  I don't feel anything, yet?

You should start to feel movement soon. If the pups are large, or she's having a small litter, they may be harder to feel. This is why I also suggest x-rays. It will let you know about how many to expect, and if there are any really big ones in there.
