low sugar level seizures in dogs

Question
I have a 7 year old Beagle bitch who has been have seizures
for the last 2 years, they always happen as she wakes in
the morning and vomits a yellow bile first. I have looked
into everything it could be and now can only put it down to
low blood sugar levels. When she comes around I give her a
spoon on honey. Is there anything I can feed her with
before she goes to bed that has a slow energy release so
the sugar levels do not drop too much before its time for
her breakfast?

Many thanks.

Answer

Hi Darren,

You didn't say if your dog is receiving medication for her seizure disorder. This is a condition which is usually very controllable with the proper medication.
If your dog is on medication, but has seizures every day, she needs an adjustment of her medication. You need to talk to your veterinarian.

The yellow bile she throws up just means her stomach is empty, this has nothing to do with her seizure disorder. Many dogs vomit first thing in the morning, sometimes giving her an extra milk bone, or a small portion of food just before bedtime helps the dog's stomach from not becoming uncomfortably empty.

Best of luck,
Patti
