Jack Russell Terrier

Question
QUESTION: I have a jack Russell Terrier who is 11 years old.  He is in generally good health.  Two weeks ago he had two canines removed with no problems. Two days ago he he returned to the vet for shots (The shot was supposed to be an antibiotic to help him heal.  Yesterday with Halloween, he was very agitated with children coming to the home. He did not eat any candy.  This morning however he awoke vomiting and shaking uncontrollably.  We thought he might be cold but this does not appear to be the case.  He has normal stool and spent the day sleeping.  He will not eat or drink.  Any help would be greatly appreciated because we have lost faith in our vet.

First off, I have to say that I am not a vet.

That said, I don't think your vet has done anything wrong.  I can't imagine what kind of antibiotic would be given 2 weeks after the removal of his teeth unless he was not healing properly.

The shaking, sleeping and not eating/drinking sounds like he might well have a fever.  Jacks will sometimes shiver because of anxiety, and he may also have just become so anxiety that he vomited.

So, I can;t tell you if last night just sent him off the deep end of anxiety and overstimulation or if your fella is really sick.  If he does not drink in the morning, it is very important that you see a vet. He can go a couple if days without eating, but water is a whole 'nother story.

I'm sorry I can't be more definitive.  Please let me know how you make out with your poor little man.

QUESTION: Beth

Thank you for your response.  He does not have a fever but shakes as if he is shivering.  He is very Lethargic. I made a mistake.  The shot was not an antibiotic but rather was supposed to help him heal. They gave him one shot like this after the removal of his canines and this last round was a follow up.  Could he be having convulsions.....?

Answer

The shot was likely for pain.

I doubt he's having convulsions, though it's always possible. Of course this is without the ability to see him.  I suspect he's sick for some reason, and needs to see the vet.
