prey drive/separation anxiety (yorkie terrier)

Question
Hello.  I have a 5 1/2 year old 4# yorkie terrier that i rescued 4 years ago.  I am her third owner and am still having difficulty with her getting along with our two cats.  She wants to chase them and is fixated on them when the three are in the same room together.  I have baby gates separating the three.  She will go into chase-mode and barks a high pitched squeal when they are around.  For her separation anxiety, she is on 10mg Clomicalm once per day, i also give her meltonin, but that doesn't seem to help either.  Also, she has never been socialized with other dogs either.  I'm wondering if there is any hope for our family to have a normal dog/cat relationship in the household.  The dog, Cece has been trained by two trainers, but i'm convinced that they didn't know how to handle her.  Any advise would be greatly appreciated.  I'm reluctant to rehome her, since she is a difficult dog, small and I'm afraid of the treatment she may get from another owner.  Thank you.

Wow - you have bitten off a lot... I can answer the cat issue fairly quickly - NO... a terrier with prey drive is nearly impossible to break of it. They have been bred for 100's of years to have that instinct and they just can;t control themselves...

My jack russell has an unstoppable prey drive and will never be safe around cats or anything else small and that moves...  I have him doing earthdog events now so he can do something with it that I won't be mad about.

I assume you crate her when you leave ??  Have you tried a baby tshirt or onsie on her ??  Just thinking out loud....

Let me know more about the conditions where you live and what you have tried other than drugs ??

Poor you... poor Cece.  Now, if you do get to the point you can;t deal, PLEASE contact breed rescue. I do cairn terrier rescue and no one can do a better job of making sure that a cairn is the right dog for someone than we do... and we require a lengthy home visit and tons of references....
