Question
QUESTION: i have a cairn terrier i got her at just over 8 weeks as the owners did not want her as shre was runt of the litter and was born with 3 and a half legs so i went to see her and loved her from day one would not change her for the world. she came in to season 5 weeks ago and i have been told terriers are pron to having fantom pregs her nipples are all up and have started to swell was wondering what was going on really as most of the seasons that are old terriers we have had have lasted 3 weeks at max can u help me please thank u vicki and love lovely missie

ANSWER: Vikki

I have very little experience with dogs in season since my own dogs, and all rescue fosters, have been spayed.

Yes, seasons usually only last about 3 weeks, so I would take her to a vet to rule out anything that might be a real problem.  I would be a little concerned that since she was born with a visible birth defect that she might have another that is not visible from the outside.

Bless you for loving this kid !  I have had many "disabled" fosters - but they were never really disabled.

Let me know how you make out

ANSWER: Sure sounds like a false pregnancy.

Please do give me an update once she's been to a vet.

My poor foster cairn is healing up today from having a hernia repair yesterday. She is not impressed that another vet missed it when they spayed her.  She spent the first years of her life as a breeding dog in a puppymill.

Answer
Vicki -

Poor kiddo. I sure hope she dries up soon.  You're right - taking away everything she wants to treat like a puppy feels mean, but it's important in order to help her hormones return to normal.

Chloe weighs 11 lbs, so she's pretty small.
