Question
Hi i have a 1 yr old rat terrier/pomeranian. First thing in morning we go outside to potty and he does poop and pee for me then he is praised and is giving a treat. Its just that he doesnt go to the door to let me know that he needs to go back outside when its time. How can i get him to let me know he needs to go outside to potty? do you have any suggestions

Answer
Benita -

I have no experience with specifically training a dog to alert me when they have to potty.

My dogs either just head to that door and stand there and stare at me until I catch on, or I take them out before they ask.  I foster dogs who are not housebroken, so I am usually on a schedule that is frequent enough so the foster dogs don't have a chance to potty in the house.

That way, they learn that I am very happy when they potty outside, making housebreaking pretty darned easy.

I do know there are items like this that come with instructions for training dogs to use them.

Good luck !
