Question
Hello
We are a little concerned about our female boston terrier. My daughter came home for a visit with her 8 month old male pug while our 5 year old boston terrier was in heat. We tried to keep them apart but got distracted and they ended up mating. We have never bred a dog and have absolutley no idea what to expect. They did get stuck together and then they were very tired so im assuming they did mate. Im not sure what to do next. How do you know if the mating was successful? Do boston terriers require c sections most of the time? Is she to old to be pregnant? Any information that you may have for us would be greatly welcomed!!! Thank you Laura

Answer
Usually when they tie....or when they get stuck together, they have successfully mated. You should notice in about a two weeks or so that her nipples will enlarge and look like they are getting ready to feed. it takes 63 days of gestation and they are usually right on the dot when it comes to going into labor. so, count the days from the day you know they tied, and that will be her due date. again, they arnt like humans where we can go on for weeks under or over out due dates.... they dont mess around. She isnt too old, 5 years is actually a very healthy age for a dog to get pregnant. She is instinctively ready, which is most important. Bostan terriors have very large, hard skulls, and that sometimes proves to be a problem when trying to pass the birth canal. My best suggestion is to moderate her come close to her due date, and be prepared to take her to a vet. I recently birthed my yorkies three puppies, and its not easy! I would hate to see any of the puppies harmed during birth, so plan out a close vet, and several others that you can go to when she starts to go into labor. you will notice some discharge the day she is about to birth, and she will be trying to nest by digging, and laying down. please let me know if you need any other help!
