My Jack Russell cross Yorkshire Terrier

Question
I have a 9 yr old terrier who has never barked during the night until 4 weeks ago, when we had to have our older dog put to sleep.  He shows no other signs of missing his companion, but is now barking from 4.45 a.m. every morning!  We have tried giving him a soft teddy bear to sleep with, letting him out as late as possible at bed time and generally making a bigger fuss of himduring the day.  He sleeps in our conservatory (attached to the house) where he has always slept.  In the interests of retaining our sanity (and that of our neighbours) can you help please.
Many thanks

Answer
If they slept together he could be missing the other dog in his own way, at night.

I would try to give him a stuffed kong or a chewie (like a bully stick) just at night (to keep him busy).  Perhaps letting him sleep closer to you, he may not like being alone at night.

This is a hard one to fix, as you have no control over what happened.  Try these and see if they make a difference, if not you can try a citronella collar..the collar sprays a whiff of citronella and disrupts the dogs barking.  It is harmess and not painful.  I would only go to this as a last resort though.
