Can i cut my 4 month old yorkies tail

Question

Loner
Is it okay to cut my 4 month old yorkie's tail.
I was told that it was supposed to be done within 2 weeks after birth. Loner is now 4 month and her tail is pretty long and i was wondering if it is safe to get it ducked. I had her mom Nika when she was already an adult and pregnant, her tail was already chipped and she was all trained and it was almost an easy task with her but now that she is gone and i kept one of her pups, it is my very 1st time caring for a yorkie from birth.
One vet said she will lose her balance permanently and does not recommend that i go through with the procedure. She is eating her tail, at least it looks like it. Hope you can advise me on what to do.

Answer
Erna,
as you may know, it is illegal to dock tails in Europe now. What was once accepted is now being challenged world wide. There is legislation underway to do the same thing here in this country. The exception being a medical reason. I would say that her eating her tail should be considered one.
I have seen dogs tails docked at later ages and have no effect on them whatsoever. In fact I had my own Wire Fox Terrier re-docked since the first one done by the breeder was not the correct length for the show ring back in the day with no ill effects. Now all the dogs coming in from Europe all have uncropped tails and ears.
It's become a badge of animal rights to wear the natural appendages.
If you feel however the dog is not comfortable you should discuss this with you vet- maybe a different one, since I have never heard the excuse given by yours.
It should be done under anesthesia tho in my opinion.
good luck
